Domain Aliases

Posted by sagentm [November 10, 2004]

Hello,

I'm not seeing referring URLs for my aliases, let me explain the configuration in hopes you can offer a solution;

Main Domain: www.mydomain.com
10 Domain Aliases: these are aliased to the main domain as follows... www.alias.com and alias.com

There appears to be gripping in effect because the alias name shows up in the URL address bar. When I use the host's stats the aliases show up as referring URLs which is what I need, unfortuneatley the host's stats are not nearly as professional as yours which I'm hoping to buy today. The alias/referrer report is one of the most important stats to me, can you think of anything we can do to get this working?

thx... sagentm!

There is no quick solution to see the full hostname or domain name in the pages & file's reports. MetaTraffic only tracks the full url for referring Urls, otherwise it only logs the path, pagename, and querystring value.

The only way to see the full hostname that is being accessed is by viewing the referrer reports but this would only work if they viewed more than one page.

You can always submit a feature request to add this functionality.

Hi,

Actually that's all I am hoping to see, just the domain in the referrer report, nothing more, meaning the page and file reports aren't important at this point. That's what puzzles me, I should being seeing the referring domains, shouldn't I?

Let me elaborate, I have a main domain name and it's hosted with a company that lets me add some domain aliases. I also some other domain names that are parked at a completely different registrar. The names that are parked at the other registrar have URL forwarding turned on and are pointing to my main domain name back at the webhost. I can see all these in the referrer stats just fine. But the domains that I have setup at the host, meaning the aliases, do not show up in the referrer report.

These aliases show up in the my webhost's stats... what could be so different about their stats? Beleive me, your stats are far superior and should be showing the referring domains.

Webhost: www.maindomain.com (does not show up in referrer reports)

Webhost Alias: otherdomains.com ( these alias to my main domain above, but do not show up in referrer reports)

Different Registrar: differentdomains.com (these are being forwarded to the main domain back at the webhost and they show up in the stats, that's what is so puzzling)

Have I made this any easier to understand, or have I complicated matters :-)

thx... sagentm!

Domain Aliases

As I've said before, the main domain and domain aliases that are hosted on the web site where you are collecting stats will only show up in the referrer reports if the visitor visits more than one page. For example, they load a page, then click on a link in that page and load another page. This will generate a referrer on the second page from the first page loaded which will contain the domain.

Also, make sure that the site aliases configuration option DOES NOT contain any hostnames or domains that you would like to see in the referrer reports.

Gotcha - THX!

You had mentioned a request for a new feature, would this new feature solve the problem at hand? If so, what am I calling this potential new feature when I request it so that you recall the purpose of it?

One last idea, for your opinon, do you think if I created a new main page with a meta-refresh to the existing page, it would count as a clicked link like you're saying?

thx... sagentm!

I think the feature you are looking for is to be able to see the host name in your page view reports; thats what I would call it.

You can test the meta refresh thing, but I would avoid doing that as it might not be good from a search engine prospective.
