I moved my site from one server to another over a weekend period. The new host only offers support during work hours and doesn't have an online control panel to administer permissions. This means I'm at their support departments mercy for changing permissions of directories and files. As I was moving a database that already had information in it this wasn't a problem. The site is also on a FrontPage enbled server, so FrontPage is able to set the permissions for the /fpdb directory for correct operation and writing to the database.
This made me think of how I could achieve a new installation if I didn't have rights to change directory permissions. From what I can figure out, I am able to edit config.asp manually to make MetaTraffic operate, however; on a new installation there is no username or password by default in the database. Obviously this could be entered manually but the initial user would need MS Access to do it. (Assuming an installation using Access, so that FrontPage could upload the database and set the correct permissions to it or on a server that already has a specific directory for databases).
If there were a default username and password in the database (or the ability to download a database with a username and pasword in it for those that need it), all that needs to be changed manually, is the config.asp file. Once the user logs in using the default admin username and password they can assign a new one for themselves and delete the default one.
I thought I would share this with you as it may help your users install MetaTraffic manually or use it on some of the free services such as Brinkster etc.
