Purpose of redirect tracking

Posted by ebased [February 9, 2007]

Hey Guys,

I have 2.23 Pro and wondered whats the purpose of Redirect tracking with the href tracking code. I placed it on a link that opened a pdf file and I got the same effects of just viewing the pages that were loaded. for example, if someone went to www.mysite.com/dls/file.zip, or i had redirect tracking on it, I still see the same outcome in the reporting. Am I missing something?

Purpose of redirect tracking

Hi

For non-html based files, redirect tracking is the only way to track them in MetaTraffic. For html based files (ASP, PHP, HTML, etc), MetaTraffic relies on a snippet of tracking code embedded in the page to be executed in order to track the page being loaded. Because this is not possible with non-html based files, the redirect tracking method must be used instead.

Purpose of redirect tracking

ok

thanks chad.

I think I understand it a little better. So, in normal cercumstances, you would not need this code. what would be a good example of a page that would need it?

Purpose of redirect tracking

I assume you mean the redirect tracking? You should never use the redirect tracking with a "page". It should only be used with what are considered downloads in MetaTraffic such as PDF files, executables, zip files, etc. As I said before, redirect tracking should only be used with any non-html based files.
